My all time favorite Jazz AlbumJul 04, 2010
By Oxxyyd I have been listening to many different types of Jazz over the years; from the early days to contemporary style.
I have always prefered the early-mid 60's style when Jazz in my opinion "peked". This album is probably one of the most demanding, complex and exquisite that I know of. It encapsulates many things in one...extreme modernized bebop extension, crazy and incredibly brilliant solos and very tight team play. Its like they are slightly mad whilst playing.
It takes quite a while before you can penetrate this album. But once you get into it it is more interesting and emotionally satisfying then anything I have ever listened to within Jazz.
But lets be clear; this is not an album for the faint harted or the person who is new to Jazz. This is demanding music played sometimes at breakneck speed and partly atonal.
The sound quality is not perfect due to the fact that it is recorded live in the club, but this only enhances the emotions and feeling of authenticity. It would have never been as good, had they recorded it in a studio.
Herbie Hancock on Piano takes no prisoner
Miles Davis plays as if he is part of another world
Tony Williams ties the band together and pushes the band forward through his refreshing drum play
Wayne Shorter is great.
Bottom line: These Jazz-Demi-Gods created the most difficult, hard hitting, wonderful live Jazz album out there!
Buy it if you dare.

Music is cooking; sound quality is stone coldOct 16, 2011
By Dr. Ray This is a great live album; my only complaint is the sound quality - I have played this disc on a decent system (dedicated CD transport, tube amps, and beyond-modest speakers), and find that instrument separation and sound stage are virtually NON-EXISTENT!! I have played tons of other Miles' albums on the same system and most of them sound great - especially the Columbia/Sony releases, remastered or not.
I strongly recommend the "Highlights from Plugged Nickel" instead, unless you don't mind hearing the great(est) Jazz live performance using one ear.

Cookin' with MilesNov 22, 1999
By Magnus Hjorth I just get so impressed of him. Imagine standing every other night playing at a club, doing the absolutely hardest jazz every night. He keeps doing new music every night. 't doesn't matter if he pauses or if he plays, the music is always perfect. It, luckily, lacks the complex and flashy fingerworks of other contemporary jazzmasters works. The music is totally spontaneous.. And the fiveplay here is as good as always. Ron Carter with his fantastic walkinglines. Herbie Hancock completing the chords in new ways. Tony Williams burning behind the drum-set. Wayne Shorter exploring his tenor sax. And finally Miles floating upon it as the king he is...or was. Wow

COOKIN'!Mar 28, 1999
This is a good Miles CD, but you should probably get the box set. Miles plays all the tunes very swiftly. It is kind of strange to hear "Stella By Starlight" played this quickly, but it's hip.
