Description:

Originally released in 1959, Miles Davis's magnum opus Kind of Blue is still considered by many to be one of the greatest albums of all time. Starring Davis, John Coltrane, Cannonball Adderley, Bill Evans, Wynton Kelly, Paul Chambers, and Jimmy Cobb, Kind of Blue has held onto its status as an album that crosses genres, speaks to generations, and is one of the first (if not the first) album that any new jazz acolyte purchases. Kind of Blue (Legacy Edition) offers the complete studio sessions on 2 CDs, including false starts, alternate takes and a 17-minute 1960 live version of "So What."

This is the best of Miles Davis. I love it and my gift recipient loved it too.

5WORTH BUYING AGAINDec 04, 2009
On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the recording of "Kind of Blue", Sony has released seemingly the 50th version of the album. Let me just say, it's well worth buying again. No need to go into the musical content, everyone is familiar with it by now. As drummer Jimmy Cobb, the last surviving musician for the sessions said, it must have been made in heaven.

The reason to buy this, as with the new Beatles reissues, is the remastering. This is my third iteration of KOB. I had the gold disc and the 1997 reissue, and this one just blows them both away in terms of sound quality. I'm listening to this 50 year-old recording on a 20 year-old Kenwood amplifier and 15 year-old Klipsch speakers, and I swear it's like I'm at the recording session!

Factor in the second disc of the only other recordings made by this lineup, and this release is a bargain.

there is no greater jazz album;miles at the top of his game. i bought this as an update to my existing album. the sound is great and it is an economical alternative to the more expensive reissues.

This edition is great great great! The outtakes are pretty interesting. Even if you have the original version, with the new material this is a treasure. Buy it!

5StillnessSep 02, 2009
We've all heard "Kind of Blue" -- one of the great achievements of 20th Century music -- many, many times, on vinyl and CD. As so many fine reviews here have stated, the Legacy Edition is different. Boy, is it.

What overwhelmed me was the quiet, the spacing, the stillness. . . And the growing sense of aloneness and separation as we move through the five main pieces.

An absolute must buy.
