This is a very nice collection of advanced solo pieces for jazz guitar. The selection is very solid, and the arrangments are really top notch. Jamie clearly put a lot of effort into this project and the outcome is apparant. There is virtually no pedagogy here - just the raw arrangments and a well recorded CD of jamie playing each tune at a performance level at normal speed. The CD alone is worth the cost of the package just as a listening CD. But be warned: although the arrangments are clean and sensibly voiced, the pieces are complex and will take considerable effort to master - but they are well worth it.

For all you guitar players who are Miles Davis fans (who isn't?), this is a gold mine. Be forewarned: these arrangements encompass some fairly advanced technique. The arrangements are well done and true to the spirit of the original Miles pieces themselves (IMHO). Both music notation and TAB are provided, with chord names as well. The best part of this book is the CD that comes with it. Jamie Findley plays each track in real time and the recordings are clear and well executed. Songs are in the same order as they are presented in the book. The amount of effort that Mr. Lindley put into this is apparent and definitely paid off. This work succeeds on several levels: as a guitar technique learning tool, as a Miles learning tool and as a theory tool. Exceptionally well done. Buy it and you will not regret it. Maybe someday Mr. Lindley will do Coltrane's "Love Supreme"??

Great book but not for a beginner. This product and I would say most jazz books should be for only for an experienced guitar player unless you really have the desire to sit down and spend alot of time learning the songs. The companion CD is great and I actually listen to it on it's own.

This book and CD, as far as I can tell, are a rare find for any intermediate guitarist looking to learn some nice chord melody arrangements. There are a few chord melody books out there, but many of the arrangements are simplistic, or when they are not, do not include an accompanying CD which makes things more difficult if you're not an expert sight-reader (like me). The arrangements in this book are not easy but are quite rewarding once you master them. For those guitarists looking to take an already good arrangement in their own unique direction, you won't be disappointed here. Most arrangements in this book include simple solo sections that lay down a nice foundation, but also invite you to take them in any direction you want. Again, if you're not an expert sight-reader, I'd recommend listening to the accompanying performance on the CD several (or even many) times before digging into any particular arrangement. The accompanying CD with Jamie Findlay's performances makes this product something special. I would love to hear some nice performances of the chord melody arrangements in the Thelonious Monk, Kenny Burrell, and Jim Hall chord melody books. So far, this is the best chord melody book I have found yet, and would love to see more just like it.

I just received my copy a few days ago, and I was impressed after listening to all of the recordings first on the accompanying CD. Here is an excerpt from the introduction:
"On earlier projects, I would write out the entire set of arrangements and then find myself needing to rewrite a lot of the music because I couldn't keep from veering off the roadmap into improvisation-land. So with this project, I just wrote little notes to myself on a lead sheet, did some reharmonization, and tried to improvise as much as possible on the whole thing. Then I went back and transcribed the rest of it. It was a bit grueling and a lot more work, but I've never felt more satisfied with a book project, and I truly feel fortunate to have the opportunity to share it."
Even the author said it was a grueling process, and his efforts do show themselves in this body of work. The arrangements do have the improvised feel to them, but there is cohesion between the chord melody work and single line runs. The pieces can get spatial, with a lot of single-line breaks. That might not be what some fingerstyle players want, who are partial to playing consistent syncopation. This is a book of chord-melody arrangments, not Travis-style fingerpicking tunes. For the experienced jazzer, these tunes should be a fun undertaking to learn, with elements you will likely use in your own material.
These pieces are for advanced level guitarists. For the newbie to solo jazz guitar arrangements, this will be more challenging without strong technique and feel, and sight-reading skills. There is TAB under the notation, but that only shows you where the fingers go. Of course, the CD can help you a lot with learning how to execute the tunes. Like many jazz arrangements, you don't have to play it exactly how it's written. That all depends on your experience and jazz theory knowledge. The book contains arrangments of tunes that Miles made famous, not just his compositions.

Just listen to the CD alone and you will want to make this an addition to your set. He mostly plays a nylon string guitar and regular acoustic guitar on most of the tracks, along with an older-sounding archtop on at least one tune. The sound quality coming from his nylon and acoustic guitars is great.
If you want challenging, modern chord-melody arrangements of tunes that Miles made popular, get this book. If you want more of a comprehensive chord-melody book with tunes and theory material, check out Howard Morgen: Through Chord Melody and Beyond - Guitar - Bk+CD
