kind of silent sketches?Feb 27, 2000
By Funkmeister G Whilst I don't have this specific box set, I do have all 3 of the albums here [I got KOB & SOS in 1 package as well, no bonus tracks on SOS though]. Kind Of Blue is of course the greatest, most approachable jazz lp of all time etc, very listenable & memorable, highlights being So What? & All Blues. Sketches of Spain is 1 of 3 collaborations w/ Gil Evans, w/ a different sort of sound, again quite listenable. In A Silent Way is brilliant, modern jazz/fusion, the start of Miles' music getting more chaotic/out-there [up to 1975 before a big break & less interesting return]. These albums go well together & are essential [KOB is definitely anyway]. A good introduction to the Man & his music.

A superbly effective combination...Oct 09, 2001
By nicjaytee If you're new to Miles Davis - as anyone considering buying this boxed set is likely to be - then this is just about the best "primer" you could ask for: three very different albums, each of which is readily accessible to "non-jazz" fans and all of which pay back enormous rewards from repeat listening. But... what makes this particular combination so effective is that, played side by side, these albums cogently illustrate the depth of Miles Davis' skills and the breadth of styles he explored during a long and diverse career. While those "in the know" may argue that their selection is obvious, no-one appears to have done "the obvious" before. So... praise indeed to Sony/Columbia for thinking through just how to encapsulate the talents of such a complex artist without reverting to a tired "Best of..." format. And, for first time buyers, an absolute treat.

SUPERB ALBUMS BUT...Jun 14, 2003
Kind Of Blue, Sketches of Spain and In A Silent Way are three of Miles Davis's finest works, equally recommended whether you are a seadoned jazz fan or simply curious. There are hundreds of reviews on these albums and so I will simply say that I don't recommend this set in its present form as it doesn't contain the remastered Sony Legacy edition of In A Silent Way. Both Kind of Blue and Sketches of Spain are presented in their latest remastered state but the version of In A Silent way that is included is an older version with inferior sound. Also In A Silent Way is undoubtedly one of M Davis's best (and my favourite) but I imagine it makes a slightly uncomfortable juxtaposition for a new listener with the other two earliar albums. If you are looking for a 3 CD set of Miles Davis as an introduction and don't want to be overwhelmed/put off by the COLUMBIA 6 Cd box sets then I heavily recommend the KIND OF BLUE/SKETCHES OF SPAIN/PORGY AND BESS 3 CD SET which contains all 3 albums in their remastered state with new and original liner notes, session photos and bonus tracks. This set is availible on amazon. To be perfectely honest; you can't go wrong with many of Miles Davis's albums as he has an incredible body of work. If you are feeling a little more adventurous then check out the more impressionistic work of his 2nd great quintet such as E.S.P and Nefertiti.

a no brainerSep 24, 2000
By Sean M. Kelly This box set offers 3 of the most diverse, influential and popular of Miles' lps. no jazz collection can be without "Kind of Blue," "In a Silent way" is the pre-cursor to ambient rock, and is my all time favorite Miles cd, and "Sketches of Spain" prove that Miles could competently play outside the jazz idiom, in an orchestral setting. These 3 lps are must own lps, folks..and you get all 3 together for less than buying all 3 seperatly. To me, this is a total no brainer..buy and cherish these lps.
